Fencing: Tunisian juniors and U-17, top the field in 5 th Mediterranean Championship
Tunis , June 30, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--The Tunisian junior men and U-17 fencing team topped the field in the 5 th edition of the Mediterranean Championship held from June 28to 30 in Tunis . Tunisia 's men won 6 medals in all, 3 gold and 3 bronze, coming first before Egypt and Algeria . Tunisian women juniors and U-17, finished second after Italy.
The competition which started on Saturday, with the participation of 11 countries, was attended by the Mr Abdallah Kaabi, Minister of youth, sports and physical education, the president of the International Fencing Federation, René Roch, the president of the Mediterranean Fencing Federation, Lioniero Del Maschio and representatives of the participating countries.
The championship gathered 151 swordsmen and swordswomen in all categories (74 boys, 77 girls), representing 11 countries notably Algeria , Egypt , Turkey , Greece , France , Italy , Spain , Croatia , Monaco , Portugal and Tunisia , the hosting country which was represented by 29 athletes.
As a token of recognition for Tunisia's domination of the field as well as for its promotion of the sport, the president of the International Fencing Federation, Mr Rene Roch, presented Mr Kaabi with the Federation' s Gold medal.
