Tunisia- Italy, committed to the preservation of Mediterranean biodiversity

Tunis , June 27, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--Tunisian and Italian experts gathered in Tunis , have renewed their commitment of preserving the Mediterranean 's marine biodiversity against the adverse effects of climate change, pollution, as well as coastal erosion.

They also called for the strengthening of Tunisian-Italian cooperation, especially insofar as technical assistance and the promotion of partnership in scientific research, are concerned.

The call was made during a workshop organised in Tunis on Thursday, at the behest of the International Centre of Environmental technologies (CITET) in partnership with the Italian Embassy in Tunis and the Italian company "PortoAntico”.

Opening the workshop, Mr Nadhir Hamada, Minister of the environment and sustainable development reminded the audience of the extraordinary pressure witnessed by the Mediterranean , whose rhythm of renewal takes place every 90 years.

The Mediterranean sea whose surface does not exceed 0,8% of the global surface of seas and oceans in the world, attracts more than 25% of the world's maritime exchanges , he said, adding that 28% of the Mediterranean's maritime traffic, leaves its scars on the environment, especially following maritime accidents.

The various papers presented during this encounter, hinged around bilateral cooperation programs aiming at preserving marine biodiversity and the protection and management of coastal areas along the Mediterranean in general and Tunisia in particular.
