Hammamet soon to host 4 th leg of the World powerboat Championship
Tunis, June 5, 2008 (TunisiaOnline) --The coastal resort town of Hammamet, will soon host the 4th leg of the world off shore championship P1. In doing so, Hammamet will renew with an event which took place in 2003. The World powerboat championship consists of 7 legs which stretch out from the month of May to the month of October. The event is expected to take place from July 11 to 13, 2008.
All in all, more than 20 teams from the whole world, including a Tunisian team will compete for the trophy in two distinct races, evolution and supersport, to the delight of spectators fond of speed. Incidentally, it will be the only African leg of the race.
During a press point, Mr Jim O'Toole, the president of the world powerboat federation, said that he was happy to see Hammamet welcome the 4 th leg of the world championship, “which will have a great impact on the local economy and tourism “.
Abla Lassoued, a seasoned Tunisian woman rally driver who will represent Tunisia , said that she would do her utmost to get on the podium. It ought tb mentionned that in 2003 she finished in 5 th place of the race. The Tunisian captain will be accompanied by two French pilots, namely Desseaux and Sintes.
Several world champions such as Greve( Germany ), Shelley Jory( UK ), Nuzzo and Sta Sio ( Italy ), will also be present in Hammamet for the event.
On his part, Mr Philippe Ben Hamou, the race organizer, said that Tunisia “has the highest potential for economic growth” adding that it will be “a free show, not too far off the Hammamet coastline”. Indeed, the public will be able to view the two races from the Yasmine Hamammet marina, as well as from the beaches close by.
The P1 organizers also wish to bring their support to the “Basma Association for the promotion of employment among the disabled”. In the words of Mr Ben Hamou, “we will help all the children of the “Basma Asoociation”, and we will make them relive the event with us”.
