Under the slogan “Kick the habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy”, Tunisia celebrates 2008 World Environment Day
Tunis , June 4, 2008 (TunisiaOnline) --Similarly to all the nations on earth, Tunisia will celebrate on June 5 the 2008 World Environment Day under the slogan “Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy”. The event is one of the ways through which the UN can promote world wide awareness on environmental issues while enhancing political attention and action.
Even if the main celebrations will take place in Wellington , New Zealand this year, Tunisia will also celebrate the day in style under the slogan “Tunisian youth, a lever to win the stakes of development”. Conferences and awareness raising campaigns have been scheduled to take place throughout the country.
In spite of its limited resources, and by relying on its human resources, the country has been able to achieve performances which have been acknowledged throughout the world. These include the fight against all forms of pollution, reducing the greenhouse effect, the fight against desertification, the introduction of clean, renewable energies, and the preservation of biodiversity.
The country is currently paving the ground for two action plans (within 2030), to adapt agriculture to the rise of temperatures and the rise of the sea level, as well as on the use of treated waters with a view of using them on agricultural parcels in the country's governorates where water is scarcer.
Tunisia has also plans afoot to save 20% of basic energy and to increase the use of renewable energies to 4% of the national energy consumption by 2011.
Insofar as green house gas emissions are concerned a national structure has been set up since 2005, with a view to study and reduce gas emissions, following the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) initiated by the Kyoto Protocol.
The latest presidential initiative calling on oil- rich nations to allocate one dollar per barrel of oil to the finance the UN World Solidarity Fund which is based on a Tunisian initiative, testifies if need be, to the country's commitment to reinforce partnership and cooperation between all countries in the world , to fight the scourges of hunger, and underdevelopment and achieve the Millennium goals.
