French enterprises eye Tunisia to relocate their activities
Tunis , June 27, 2007 (TunisiaOnline) --After Damart's announcement at the beginning of 2007 to transfer some 70% of its activities and to build a plant in Tunisia , it is the turn of “Jalatte”, the number one European security shoes maker to announce a similar move. “Jalatte” which produces some 1,2 million pairs of shoes a year and which already has activities in Tunisia , made the announcement end of May.
“Damart”, which was set up in 1953, is the inventor of the thermolactyl fiber which it uses for its underwear garments to produce an added sensation of heat.
The group which also controls most of the French luxury lingerie production, is gradually relocating to Tunisia and Morocco in order to retain its competitive edge as it faces the onslaught of Chinese products.
In 2006, the group's turnover reached some 557 million Euros.
