Tunisia ranks 1 st in Africa in First Global Peace Index and WEF reports

Tunis, June 7, 2007- (TunisiaOnline)--Tunisia ranked 1 st in Africa, in the First Global Peace Index which lists countries around the world according to their “peacefulness”. The North African nation also received top ranking in Africa according to several World Economic Reports.

The First Global Peace Index is based on the work of The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which measured countries' peacefulness based on wide range of indicators including ease of access to weapons military expenditure, local corruption, and the level of respect for human rights. The EIU researchers also found that peaceful countries often shared high levels of democracy and transparency of government, education and material well-being.

Earlier this year, Tunisia had ranked 1 st in Africa in terms of “global economic competitiveness”) according to the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report. The same report ranked it 3 rd in the world for its sound management of “government spending”, and 10 th among nations of the world least affected by “favoritism in the decisions of government officials “.

Tunisia also ranked first in Africa in « tourist and travel competitiveness “ and in the field of new information technologies, according to separate reports also published this year the World Economic Forum .
