“Enjoying summer while keeping beaches clean”, environmental awareness campaign launched

Tunis, July 16, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--Stretching over 1300 kms, Tunisia’s coastline is heavily frequented in summer by crowds of holiday goers, most of whom are aware of environmental protection and especially of the necessity to keep beaches clean. However, in a bid to reach children as well as a segment of the population lacking in environmental awareness, a festival has been set up with the aim of achieving that goal.

Under the slogan, “Enjoying summer, while keeping beaches clean”, An itinerant environmental village will thus travel to most of Tunisia’s beaches over a period of 17 weekends. The environmental awareness campaign which was launched last weekend on the beaches of Raouad and La Marsa, north of Tunis, will comprise 30 days of activities during which vacationers are invited to join swimming activities, as well as taking part to workshops and environmental sensitization activities which will be held in beach tents.

The activities involve among other things, making artistic creations out of waste and biodegradable material, web surfing, as well as taking part to competitions and winning prizes. The dangers of climate change on our health and on sustainable development, will also be evoked.

This sea festival will run until August 17 under the aegis of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development in cooperation with the National Agency for waste management, the National Agency for coastal protection, the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ), as well as in partnership with Tunisian Scouts.
