Handicrafts: National Tourist Board issues sales guide for Tunisian carpets

Tunis, July 9, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--A new sales guide destined to further promote Tunisian carpets, while preventing price speculation, has recently been issued in Tunis. The guide which has been set up jointly by the national tourist board with the Tunisian handicrafts office, is destined to tourists and Tunisians alike, said Mr Chokri Mamoghli, the Secretary of State in charge of handicrafts during a press point held in Tunis.

The guide also offers additional information concerning weaving details, the threading texture of carpets, as well as the selling conditions, quality label, and recommended shops.

In an effort to prevent speculation, Mr Mamoghli indicated that the prices included are mostly indicative, adding that the sales guide will prevent certain carpet traders from quoting excessive prices.

This first experience will undergo an evaluation at the end of the current tourist season, and if successful, will be generalized to other products of the Tunisian handicrafts sector.

The sector of handicrafts in Tunisia employs some 300,000 people throughout the country, representing some 10% of Tunisia’s work force. Its contribution to the GNP varies between 4 and 5% and is expected to reach 8% in 2016.

More specifically, Tunisian carpet making is one of the most important sectors of activities of Tunisian handicrafts. It is estimated that 75% of Tunisia’s carpet production is destined for export.
