Vienna opera ball orchestra will perform at El Jem for Tunisian Solidarity Fund

Tunis , July 5, 2008 (TunisiaOnline)--The prestigious Vienna opera ball orchestra will perform at El Jem, formerly known as Thysdrus during the Roman area. El Jem which is reputed for its roman Coliseum, the world's second largest roman open air theatre after Rome , is also known for its splendid second and third century mosaics.

The orchestra which will be led by the renowned conductor Uwe Theimer, is composed of some 40 musicians, and dancers. The soprano Marcela Cerna and the tenor Georg Schneider, will also perform for the occasion. The event is scheduled on July 12, 2008, and the price of the tickets will vary from 20 dinars to 60 dinars, respectively the equivalent of 17 and 52 US Dollars.

Similarly to the 11 previous editions of the show, and as a token of solidarity with Tunisia , all of the proceedings will go to the Tunisian Solidarity Fund, also known as 26-26, following its postal money order account.

On the menu, a spate of symphonies by Emmerlich Kalman, Franz Lehar, Carl Michael Ziehrer, Wilhem. A. Jurek, Jacques Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Joseph Lanner, Giuseppe Verdi and one of Tunisia 's leading lute players, Kaddour Srarfi, will be served for a public of connoisseurs.

In a press conference held in Tunis on Friday, the Secretary of State in charge of the Fund, Mr Omar Ben Mahmoud, also stressed the importance of the Fund in eradicating poverty in Tunisia and whose creation by President Ben Ali , stems from a commitment to set up a culture of solidarity and mutual assistance throughout all the social strata in the country.

Mr Ben Mahmoud said that so far, some 1,3 million Tunisians had benefited from the Fund, for a total of 857,365 million dinars financed by the Fund and some 98,6 million financed by ministries, regional councils, water and power companies. The rest, amounting to 24,965 million dinars is funded by international cooperation, he added.
